Create a wildlife area in a shady corner

Interestingly, in a survey conducted by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) reported that the average garden has around 30% native plants and flowers and 70% imported.

Native insects enjoy native plants more than overseas plants (although I don’t know how they can tell the difference! ). Generally speaking, however, the wider variety of flowers in your garden the more likely you are to attracting a wider range of wildlife.

Select plants that flower throughout the year will be a great benefit to your wildlife. Spring and winter flowering plants are a must, as fewer and fewer gardens seem to have winter flowering plants in particular. A variety of heights in your plants is also helpful in attracting a wider number of species, butterfly’s and bees.

Select plants that contain pollen and nectar. Your local garden centre will be able to advise you on the best plants to select at differing times of the year. But as a general guide you may wish to consider bulbs such as snow drops and crocus for spring colour for which there is a wide variety of colours available. English bluebells, are not only an attractive display but your stock will naturally increase year after year if left undisturbed. For the winter period, why not consider Christmas Rose or winter honeysuckle.

It may take you a year or two before you really reap the rewards of your effort, but the effort will be highly worthwhile as your garden will look a picture with a wide range of flowers and you will undoubtably notice more wildlife in your garden over the period.

You may even consider planting a small wildflower meadow which will produce wildflowers during spring to late summer. Maintenance on these areas is minimal and if cut and cared for correctly will produce a more intense display year after year. Should you have bee hives nearby your local bee keeper would be very pleased.
