In the Garden This Warm, Dry April

Watering
Start watering earlier than usual, especially for newly planted trees, shrubs, and anything sown this spring. Prioritize mornings or evenings to conserve moisture.
Mulching
Apply a layer of mulch (compost, bark, or straw) around plants to help lock in soil moisture and suppress weeds. It’s especially useful with dry conditions.
Lawn Care
Lawns may already be growing fast. Mow regularly, but not too short — a slightly higher cut helps grass cope better with heat and dryness. If it's very dry, hold off on feeding until rain returns.
Sowing and Planting
You can get ahead with sowing vegetables like carrots, beets, lettuce, and beans directly outdoors. Warm soil speeds up germination, but make sure seeds and young seedlings stay moist.
Weeding
Weeds love the warmth too! Tackle them now while they’re small — it’s easier and prevents them from stealing moisture from your plants.
Hardening Off
If you've got tender plants growing indoors (like tomatoes, courgettes, or bedding plants), start hardening them off earlier than usual by gradually acclimatizing them to outdoor conditions.

Frost Watch
Even though it's been warm, a sudden late frost could still happen. Keep fleece or cloches handy just in case you need to cover tender plants.
Plan Ahead
Think about summer — start preparing beds for summer flowers and vegetables, and keep sowing succession crops to extend your harvests.
