The first step in attempting to attract more wildlife to your garden is water. All insects, birds and other wildlife require water to live so the most important first step is to provide water. It doesn’t mean that you need to dig a pond, a small container buried or even just a saucer can be sufficient.

Naturally, the larger the amount of water, the greater variety of insects and other wildlife you will encourage. If you are planting a deep container, remember to put some stones in the bottom to assist wildlife getting out of your container, should they fall in.

A pond, however, is obviously the ultimate container for water and not only aids wildlife but can add to the appearance of your garden. If you have young children you can put a net over the top of the pond which will prevent them falling into the pond, or even a small fence around the pond should prevent any dangers.

Ponds are not inexpensive and if considering you should decide how much you should budget before finally committing to such a major exercise, although they do often enhance the appearance of your garden.

Ponds will not only attract the obvious frogs, newts, dragon flies etc but by careful planting you can attract bees, butterfly’s, hedgehogs (providing they can climb in and out of your pond with ease) water voles etc.

What a treat to sit by a pond at dusk and quietly watch the wildlife around you.
